Best Moving Apps for Android

By Ripleydaniels @mikesobol

As any seasoned mover understands, the key to any successful relocation lies in the organization. After all that packing and transportation, most folks just wind up pulling their hair out. That’s why pre-planning is crucial. And like many things in the modern world, technology can facilitate the process of moving. No, robots have not yet been developed that can take care of the logistics of moving for the person in question, but there are some handy mobile apps on the market that can take some of the burden off.

Of course, the mobile-app libraries of the various platforms are just brimming with applications on a variety of subjects – including moving. That’s why, in the interest of narrowing the playing field, this list is geared towards moving apps for Android devices.

Tape Ruler – free

The notion of a “virtual tape measure” comes across as a handyman’s sci-fi dream, but it is indeed a reality. And it is immensely useful for moving jobs. Just think about all those times sofas or  bed frames get caught in a doorway and end up scuffing the wall or chipping paint. Tape Ruler can provide the exact dimensions of an object or entryway so there is no dangerous guesswork on the part of the owner. Simply fire up the app, place the mobile device on one end of the object or space in question, and move it to the other side. The app then displays the length.

Bubble Level -- free

This is another tool that can be placed in the virtual belt of the user, right alongside the tape ruler. A simple bubble level, this app eliminates the headache in one of the other frustrating parts of a move – hanging and centering pictures and portraits. The app is just as accurate as a real-world bubble level, so there’s no reason that fancy piece of artwork can’t be hung straight and even every time.

Evernote – free

While it is not geared specifically for moving, this popular mobile app can certainly be utilized for such jobs. Evernote can prove invaluable to those movers who want to keep track of the little details. Users can also use the app to create virtual checklists and even voice reminders.

Google Maps -- free

The mobile revolution is upon us, which means there is no longer any use for print maps. These days, intrepid movers can plan their route quickly and easily right from their handheld, and there are few better ways to accomplish this than with Google’s premier 3-D map application.

Moving Planner -- $0.99

An app designed specifically for relocating, Moving Planner provides the user with all the pre-planning tools he or she could possibly need. Not only does the app offer customizable to-do lists, but it also comes with an extensive library of over 200 common items (lamps, sofas, etc.) that users can input into a list in order to save time. Users can also export their lists to other devices.

By installing a few of the above options onto their Android device, those looking at an impending move should be able to remove much of the frustration inherent in the process.
