Whether your high school student is still doing Full-on-remote learningis back 100% in a school building If you're making a hybrid of the two, a good laptop is essential to getting through the school year. This list, highlighting the best laptop for high school students, is about machines that offer reliable, everyday performance and long battery life, but in sizes that will fit the average backpack and at prices around or under $ 1,000.
As more people learn and work from home, the growing need for low-cost laptops means that retailer models are often in and out of stock. The greater demand also means that third party vendors are selling laptops for a little or a lot more than their regular price. For example, one of my most popular Chromebooks right now is this Lenovo Chromebook Duet, which is listed on Amazon for $ 399 - $ 99 off the regular price of $ 300.
When purchasing a student laptop, I recommend buying direct from the manufacturer or from a trusted, trusted retailer for the best prices and return or exchange policy. If you are shopping with third party sites like Amazon or Walmart, check to see if the site ships and sells the laptop. You can find more information about shopping in our Buying advice for the best cheap laptops.

It's also worth noting that if your school uses Google Classroom, that doesn't mean you need a Chromebook. (Here are the differences between a laptop and a Chromebook.) If your high school student does their schoolwork from home, you may want to add some peripherals like a wireless mouse or keyboard as well as a inexpensive external monitor This way they are more comfortable and have a larger display to see their work.

The IdeaPad Flex 5 14 is a 14-inch two-in-one Windows laptop that allows you to use it as a regular laptop as well as a tablet or tent for presentations. It also works well with the display in stand mode, with the keyboard facing down at a desk or table so you can attach a keyboard and mouse for a better desktop experience.
It's available with either the latest Intel Core i7 processor or the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor for $ 560 and $ 688, respectively. If you can afford the additional cost, the AMD is the better deal. Either way, you get a well-built machine for the money that should last your student for several years.

The latest Apple MacBook Air hits the right notes: it's back at its old starting price of $ 999 and features Apple's new Magic Keyboard, which most people prefer to the butterfly design of the previous model. The main drawback: the base model of this Apple MacBook Air with Retina display has a Core i3 processor, and switching to the Core i5 for a more powerful laptop costs an additional $ 100.
Still, the brand new Apple MacBook Air and older models are often offered for sale. Right now, the 2020 MacBook Air retails for around $ 950, which is a decent deal for a premium laptop. That said, the 2019 base configuration that comes with an older but more powerful Core i5 processor is still a great laptop worth a look, especially when it's reduced to less than $ 900.
This is a pretty basic 15-inch Chromebook that comes with a Celeron N4000, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage (plus an additional 32GB via an SD card). There are cheaper versions on the same link starting at $ 390, but all are 11.6-inch models. So if it's not a small student or small room, or you want to connect to a display, I would think twice about it.

The Acer Aspire 5 is one of my favorite budget laptops for college students or general home use. Thanks to the 15.6-inch display of this affordable laptop, you have more space to work. It's slim and light for its size and comes with a fine range of connectors. Performance and battery life are good for the money, too. Like the IdeaPad Flex 5, this affordable laptop is available with either AMD or Intel processors of your choice.

For those who value portability more than screen size, the 13.3-inch Envy x360 is perfect. HP has shaved much of the body off this two-in-one laptop. This makes it more convenient than a tablet and small enough to easily fit on a school desk. It also offers good performance and battery life for its price. However, if your student doesn't keep everything in the cloud, you may want to configure them with more storage than the basic 128GB SSD storage.
