One of my favorite ways to get around New York City is by bike. However, there may be times when you have extra passengers or need to take something large or heavy with you that just won't fit on a traditional bike or e-bike. This is where these motorcycles come in.
Cargo e-bikes are longer with heavier frames than the average e-bike. Their sturdy frames contain storage boxes or platforms that allow you to strap or carry packages around your kids or even the family dog while you are pedaling. Thanks to technical improvements in engines and batteries, cargo bikes can transport more and travel greater distances on a single charge. The category is also growing. While this list is short for now, you can expect more options to become available soon.

Rad Power Bikes is a strong competitor in the e-bike market, offering 10 different models at competitive prices. One of the first Rad Power Bikes I tested was the Rad Runner, which was both versatile and inexpensive. It can be adapted for cargo or a single small passenger. But what if you had two little ones? This is where the $ 1,699 RadWagon 4 comes in: drivers can place two children on their back with a bench and step for a footrest on the floor, or you can have a rear basket for extra carry with a second basket on the front for Still pictures add more capacity. The luggage rack in particular is ideal for trips to Trader Joe's and Costco. It can also easily carry a case of wine.
The well-constructed RadWagon 4 made of 6061 aluminum has a seven-speed Shimano cassette and a 750-watt hub motor with five cadence levels, with which you can reach 32 km / h by pedaling or accelerating. The battery fully charges in 5 to 6 hours and when fully charged it will travel between 25 and 45 miles depending on bike load, terrain and pedal assistance. The battery can also be charged on or on the bike and is removed with the same key that is required to start the RadWagon 4.
The bike will fit riders 5 feet, 1 inch to 6 feet, 4 inches tall and it can support a total weight of 350 pounds. The RadWagon 4 itself weighs 73 pounds and has dual cable disc brakes that work in all weather conditions. It also has a unique 22 "x 3" tire that gives the rider near fat tire stability and a slightly larger height than a 20 ", improving overall performance without downsizing smaller riders.
A sturdy steel center stand holds the bike upright while you load it, and it has a center step frame that makes it easy to take off or gain weight on the bike. Just sit on the bike and slide it forward to take off. No need to try to balance and assemble a bike with young or laden groceries.
The RadWagon has a smooth ride and the ability to tilt the handlebars to maintain an upright position makes long journeys a breeze, even with one hand and a full load. The bike is equipped with both front and rear lights that also indicate braking. They can be switched on and off manually or set to activate automatically. The backlit LCD display provides battery level, speedometer, odometer, odometer, pedal assist level and other information. There is also a 5-volt USB port under the display for charging mobile devices.

The $ 4,295 Bunch Bike Original 2020 Edition can definitely replace a car, especially here in New York City. You only need adequate parking space if you don't have a garage. The bike design reminds me of an old ice cream seller's tricycle from yesteryear, with a cooler on the front of the bike.
The Bunch Bike is not huge, but it does require some storage space. However, its size, or at least its storage capacity, is its advantage and was immediately used by my entire family. This cargo bike can accommodate up to four children and has seat belts to keep them safe. There is additional storage space under the benches that can be locked. The bike has a rear key lock that prevents someone from rolling the bike while you are running errands.
We used the bike for Costco runs, trips to our locker, and to take George, our cat, to the vet in his luggage rack. For this type of trip with other cargo bikes, we also had to use our backpacks, but not with the bunch bike. Everything fit easily in the cargo box and it was a breeze to drive back and forth.
The bike is powered by a 500 watt brushless hub motor and an eight-speed Shimano cassette. The battery can be charged on or off the frame. It takes about 6 to 7 hours to charge. The bike is easy to ride even without assistance and does not have the motor resistance that I have experienced on some e-bikes with hub motors. The nice thing about three wheels is also the ability to have three hydraulic disc brakes that stop the bike in no time.
There are five levels of pedal assist and a thumb throttle, which I mainly used for starts on inclines. The assistance reaches up to 32 km / h, which is more than enough. Since the bike has three wheels, it takes some getting used to, especially when turning. There were also some bends in the frame while driving, which the company claims is the company's anti-tip technology. An outer frame protects the cargo space together with the wheels. It also has some nicely placed square footplates that are used for entering and exiting the cargo space. There's even a rain cover that can be bought to keep the cargo space dry or to block out the wind on a cool day.
The overall ride of the bike is better when there are passengers in the hold or something heavy to provide ballast. Surprisingly, the bike itself is lighter than it looks (although it still weighs 152 pounds), and it helps to have everything you cart closer to the rider to prevent possible tipping over while getting off.
The bike has front and rear lights as well as reflectors on the front of the cargo space. A large display gives you access to important statistics at a glance. However, the placement of the pedal assistants could be better. Sometimes I would accidentally press the increase and decrease buttons with my thumb. That being said, the layout is really nice and overall it's a lot of fun to drive.

The Riese & Müller Load 60 Touring HS is a premium ride with premium features and a premium price of $ 8,089. I took a special trip to Propel e-bike shop in Brooklyn to test out this bike. This is an excellent option for living in the city without a car.
One of the first things I noticed while standing over the bike was how long the front cargo space is. Amazingly, it went as smoothly as if I were riding a regular bike, even on some of Brooklyn's bumpiest back streets. The Load 60 is equipped with both front and rear suspension and a comfortable gel seat.
A small but welcome feature is the reclined seat tube. For taller riders, the further you lift it, the further back it goes and offers better leg extension. It has a quickly adjustable, adjustable stem tube that can be moved backwards, forwards, up and down. This makes it easier for you to find a handlebar sweet spot when you need to share it with family and friends. It seats riders from 5 feet to 6 feet 5 inches tall, and its flat frame makes maneuvering sharp and responsive.
The front cargo area offers space for two small children or one larger child and can be attached to a soft upholstered seat with its five-point belts. There's also a small storage space under the seat. For those who don't want to transport children, there is also a locker option that is great for messenger, carrying tools and groceries - what you call it. The cargo space can hold up to 200 pounds, and the bike itself can support a total weight of 551 pounds. it weighs about 80.7 pounds alone.
The model I tested had two Bosch PowerPack 500 performance batteries, but the bike can run on a single battery. The batteries propelled the bike's 250 watt motor to a top speed of 28 mph. There's a Shimano SLX 11-speed 11-46 cassette that will keep you moving too. The distance depends on the assistance you get, as well as the terrain and bike load. The charging time is about six to seven hours, depending on the battery level. I have never fully discharged a micro-mobility battery because it is not healthy and it usually degrades the product's performance.
There's a built-in display that lets you view your current assistance mode, battery level, speed, and other information. There is also a cell phone application that can provide you with this information along with some other functions.
The model I tested had a luggage rack that can also be used for additional storage space. I cannot stress enough how smoothly and comfortably the Load 60 drives. A full list of specifications and adjustments can be found at Riese & Müller. If you're in the New York City area, check out Propel in Brooklyn.
