What is Memory?
Memory is the faculty by which the brain can encode, store, and retrieves the information we have learned or experienced. It is termed as a record of experience for guiding future actions. As it is not a flawless process so sometimes we misremember the past things. These are not encoded properly in the first place of memory.
These problems can range from actions like forgetting where you left your car keys, wallet, etc. to some major diseases, like Alzheimer’s, dementia, that affects the quality of life and unable to function properly.
Different areas of the brain like the hippocampus, amygdala, etc. affect different aspects of memory. Like the hippocampus is linked to spatial memory, which helps the brain map the surrounding world and finds its way around a known place while the amygdala is linked to emotional memory.
How are memories formed?
For making new memories, information must be changed into a usable form with the help of a process known as encoding. Once it is encoded successfully, it must be stored in memory for later use. Many of the times this memory lies outside of our awareness except when we actually need to use it. A process called retrieval allows us to bring stored memories into conscious awareness.
How long do memories last?
Some memories are very brief for just seconds long, and allow us to take in sensory information about the world around us.
Short-term memories are last about 20 to 30 seconds and these memories also involve the information we are currently focusing on and thinking about. But some memories are capable to endure for long-lasting days, weeks, months, or even decades. These long-term memories lie outside of our immediate awareness, but when they are needed we can draw them into consciousness.
What are the different types of memory?
Memory is divided into two types- Short-term and Long-term Memory
Short-term memory: In this type of memory your mind stores information for just a few seconds or a few minutes. Like typically enough time to dial a phone number or write down an instructor’s thought. The brain can hold an average of seven items in short term memory.
Long-term memory: It involves making an effect to retain the information because it is personally meaningful to you like information about the family and friends, material you’re studying for a test. It also involves episodic memories like personal memories about experiences, semantic memories like the color of your hair, and procedural memory like work you perform in your daily routine.
