Most memes get lucky when they see a second day. A picture of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders at Inauguration on WednesdayThe exception is to sit with your arms folded and wear a mask and large mittens. Since inauguration day, it has been endlessly shared and tweaked - and even inspired a bobblehead character. And it's strong for days after it was created.
What is this mitten meme anyway?
With the distant possibility that you won't see the photo, it shows Sanders in a familiar winter jacket, blue face mask, and giant gloves given to him by Vermont's teacher Jen Ellis.
"I gave Bernie's mittens a few years ago," Ellis tweeted on Wednesday. "They're made from recycled wool sweaters and lined with fleece (made from recycled plastic bottles)."
Now Bernie is everywhere
Sanders' casual wear and presumably grumpy dadcore appearance have inspired creative types to incorporate his image into all kinds of images, from scenes The Sopranos and Forrest Gump to historical photographs. He showed up in game of Thrones, The shinin and The bachelor, on Chicago El, with Batman and than that fly on Mike Pence's head of the Vice-presidential debate in October. It actually was painted on fingernails.
You can place Bernie anywhere on this website
Sharing Sanders in new places just got easier when Nick Sawhney, a student at New York University, created a website that allows users to place the image in any Google Street View photo. Sawhney told Wired magazine that the website was way beyond his expectations, and he panicked when its popularity earned him increased fees. (He's taking donations and has a contract with the cloud platform that the website is on and says he has enough cash to keep the website alive for about a week, Wired reports.)
Chairman Bernie sweatshirt sold out
On Thursday, Sanders' official website took pre-orders for a crew-neck sweatshirt featuring a picture of a grumpy Sander on the chair with the "Bernie" logo. It's $ 45 but sold out instantly. The site named the shirt "Chairman Sanders Crewneck" and touts it showing, "Vermont jacket, Vermont gloves, Vermont common sense." The website adds that 100% of the proceeds will go to Meals on Wheels Vermont.
Bobblehead Bernie
And Bernie with a mitt goes in 3D. The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and National Bobblehead Museum, which apparently exist, turn the moment into a bobblehead. You can pre-order it now for $ 25, though you might have forgotten why it was fun in the first place by the expected May delivery.
The image has also found its way to stickers.
The senator speaks
Sanders was utterly true to himself when asked for comment. First, he defended his outfit against Gayle King on CBS This Morning. "In Vermont we know about the cold and aren't that concerned about good fashion," he said. "We want to keep warm and I did that today."
He also told CNN reporter Ali Zaslav that he was glad the viral photo was "making people aware that we are making good mittens in Vermont" and praising his state's coat-making skills, and no, that phrase is not invented.
Bernie Sanders said of the photo, which went viral of him sitting bundled up on inauguration day, that he is glad that it "makes people aware that we make good mittens in Vermont" when asked @alizaslav
He added, "We have some good coats too."

No mittens for you
Ellis told The Jewish Insider she had no more mittens to sell.
"There's no way to make 6,000 pairs of mittens, and every time I check my email, several hundred people have emailed me," she said in the interview. "I hate to disappoint people, but the mittens are one of a kind and one of a kind and sometimes you just can't get everything you want in this world."
The best of the Bernie meme
Here are 10 exceptionally fun early versions of the meme. Your mileage can vary, of course, but there are easily hundreds more if that is not enough.
1. The unnecessary meeting
"If you are invited to a meeting, it should be an email." Which office worker cannot relate?
2. 'Joe's Thing'
Slightly different photo, but this one is a winner on the perfectly crafted faux schedule for Sanders' day, including "drop-off cleaning," "Joe's thing" and "swing at the post office".
3. Prepared pockets
Every grandfather's jacket is like this. The headline reads, "You can't tell me these pockets are not filled to the brim with crumpled tissues and receipts."
4. Bernie in Nighthawks
Sanders has been cast into many famous images, including many paintings, but somehow his tenacious loner figure fits right in with Edward Hopper's Nighthawks.
5. Steal his gaze
Fashion magazines like to tell readers how to recreate a particular outfit. The best part about it is the Manila envelope.
6. Envelope of the Secret
BuzzFeed's Ruby Cramer reports that the Manila envelope that Sanders is capturing in a picture contains his initiation cards. OK, that seems plausible, but other ideas are funnier, including this one that claims that "there is an article in the envelope that Bernie cut out of the newspaper that he thought was interesting".
7. The heat is on
In 2020, Sanders became a meme for "Asking Your Financial Support Again". The meme "Once again" met the meme "Grandpa Bernie in a chair" with this meme in which Sanders asked "" again about space heating. "Look, DC is going to be cold in January.
8. Bernie with Deadpool
This one only makes the list because Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, shared it.
9. Merch table Bernie
Something about this attitude just rocks. Maybe because it's been so long since either of us went to live concerts. "No, we don't have a gray shirt in an XL!"
10. Places to go, things to do
And we return to the Manila cover image for this classic where Sander's patience wears off for a long formal affair. It says, "Bernie, dressed like the inauguration, is on his to-do list today, but it's not his whole day."
The pigeon has landed
Sanders wasn't the only initiatory meme, although it was definitely the greatest. Lady Gaga also inspired some fashion comments. She carried a huge golden pigeon pin as she did sang the national anthemand she explained its meaning in a tweet she shared that included a close-up photo of the pin. "A pigeon with an olive branch," she wrote. "May we all make peace with one another."
But some thought the pin was more like the Mockingjay, a fictional bird that the heroine Katniss Everdeen wore as a pin in the book and film series The Hunger Games.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 1st Hunger Games," wrote a Twitter user.
"Gaga wears the mockingjay if you stick to the book rather than the movie," wrote another.
Instant photos
A moment after the swearing-in ceremony caught the attention of some. Kevin McCarthy, Minority Chairperson of the House, and Steny Hoyer, Majority Chairperson, presented photos of the just concluded events leading up to it to the new President and First Lady Jill Biden Some come across the government's technological knowledge.
"LOL, McCarthy & Hoyer are giving Biden & Harris Instaphotos of the inauguration like they just got off the hot new roller coaster at Six Flags," wrote Mike DeBonis of the Washington Post.

And the night ended with a gigantic fireworks display, during which some spectators were amazed at the sheer amount of pyrotechnics.
"Anyone who was responsible for collecting fireworks should get vaccinated," said comedian Jordan Klepper.
Another person had some thoughts on the elaborate display and wrote, "So we don't have to spend any of the housewarming budget on port-a-potties, additional mall security, depot services, etc. So we can spend it on something." otherwise? Do you say how fireworks? "
