Ber Ki Chutney, Indian Plum and Mint Dip

By Anjana Chaturvedi @maayeka

A healthy, tangy fruity dip of Indian plum and mint

Ber / Regi pandlu /kul / Indian jujube / Indian plum is a seasonal fruit which is available in abundance in winter at very reasonable rates. This small fruit has numerous health benefits so have been used in many herbal medicines across Asian countries. It has anti-cancer properties, aids in weight loss, is rich in antioxidants, relaxes the nervous system, helps in strengthening of bones, teeth, and digestive system, builds immunity and also helps in Alzheimer’s.

It is a low fat and inexpensive fruit so should be consumed throughout the season. But in-spite of having so many health benefits many people often avoid eating this wonderful fruit – usually due to its hard texture or not so great taste. Even in my house whenever I’ve brought ber my kids have eaten only just 2-3 bers.

Last week when someone brought fresh and juicy green ber from their farmhouse and they were just lying in the fruit basket so I thought of making some thing interesting out of them so everyone at home can eat the healthy fruit, so I just tried making this ber chutney and it came out super delicious and the bowl of chutney was finished immediately without any fuss. I served the chutney with Grilled Mumbai sandwich and Batata vada and no body even noticed that the chutney was made with ber.
