Benefit Roller Lash Vs Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara

I’m usually quite loyal when it comes to mascaras but this week I’ve been dividing my attention between two very different brands. A week ago I drifted into the Dior department in Harvey Nichols and came out with a few new bits and a fairly hefty dint in my bank balance. I originally went in for a mascara and came out with a foundation (and a matching foundation brush), the most amazing pink blusher and the Diorshow Iconic Overcurl mascara. I’d been using it for about a week before the Benefit Roller Lash mascara landed in my letterbox giving me the perfect opportunity to compare and share my thoughts on both. I usually wait at least two weeks before I review a new beauty product but I simply couldn’t wait so this is just my initial thoughts. For me there’s no question where you should be spending your pennies.

I love designer makeup but when it comes to mascara I often feel let down. I’ve tried Chanel (smudgy), YSL (clumpy) and Lancome (spidery) and have been equally unimpressed. Until now I’ve never dabbled with Dior and I was totally sold on the Overcurl not only by the shiny silver packaging but with the fabulous curved wand.

While it is an OK choice for everyday, I don’t feel like it does my lashes justice. I have long lashes and the Dior mascara doesn’t offer the definition I require. The brush is quite thick but the bristles are soft so it coats the lashes but lacks in definition and lift.

One of my favorite things about blogging is getting to try out new products before they officially go on sale so when I received this fabulous package from Benefit, I couldn’t wait to try it. As this was a pre-release sample I knew there would be quite a lot of hype about it and I wasn’t sure whether Roller Lash would live up to it. The first thing I noticed when using the Roller Lash mascara is the brush is more of a comb and in my opinion the very best mascaras have a brush like this. My favorite ever mascara by Maxfactor had a comb like application and I would still be using it today for that very reason if it hadn’t been discontinued (Why do people ruin lives by discontinuing products??). The Roller Lash mascara goes one step further than this with a curved comb and the combination lifts the lashes and separates them while defining each and every one.

I was surprised to discover that both of these mascaras were the same price an eye-watering £19.50. Unlike the Diorshow Iconic Overcurl mascara, I’d purchase the Roller Lash over and over again. It dramatically changes the look of my lashes and instantly makes my eyes look more open and awake. It isn’t as pretty as the Dior one, there is something really fancy about the glossy silver packaging and the black branding but I found I only needed one coat of the Roller Lash to create luscious lashes. Did I mention it clump-free?
