What is Bell’s palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles. It occurs when the nerve that controls the facial muscles becomes swollen or compressed.

In this condition, one side of your face droops or become stiff. There will be difficulty in smiling or closing the eye on the affected side. In most of the cases, Bell’s palsy is temporary and symptoms usually go away after a few weeks.

Although Bell’s palsy can occur at any age, but the condition is more common among people between the age group of 16 to 60.

What causes Bell’s palsy?

Bell’s palsy occurs when the seventh cranial nerve becomes swollen which results in the facial weakness or paralysis. This cranial nerve passes through a narrow and bony area within the skull. When this nerve even a little bit of nerve swells, it pushes against the skull’s hard surface. This affects the proper working of the nerve. The main cause of this disease is not known, but medical researchers have believed that it is most likely to be triggered by a viral infection.

The viruses/bacteria that are linked to the development of Bell’s palsy include:

Herpes simplex virus: It causes cold sores and genital herpes

HIV: This damages the body’s immune system

Sarcoidosis, which causes organ inflammation

Herpes zoster virus: This virus causes chickenpox and shingles

Epstein-Barr virus: It causes mononucleosis

Lyme disease, which is a bacterial infection caused by the infected ticks

What are the symptoms of Bell’s palsy?

The symptoms of Bell’s palsy develop one to two weeks after infections like cold, ear, or eye infection. It usually appears abruptly, and the person may notice it when wake up in the morning or when trying to eat or drink.

This condition is marked by a droopy appearance on one side of the face and the person is unable to open or close your eye on the affected side. In some of the cases, Bell’s palsy may affect both sides of the face.

Other signs and symptoms of Bell’s palsy include:

  • drooling
  • difficulty eating and drinking
  • an inability to make facial expressions, such as smiling or frowning
  • facial weakness
  • muscle twitches in the face
  • dry eye and mouth
  • headache
  • sensitivity to sound
  • irritation of the eye on the involved side

What are the risk factors for Bell’s palsy?

Here are some of the risk factors that increase the chances of Bell’s palsy:

  • Pregnancy
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Lungs infection
  • A family history of the condition

Most of the time, these symptoms are only temporary.


What is the Ayurvedic treatment of bell’s Palsy?

6. Trikatu Syrup:

Proper diet and lifestyle

  • Avoid taking chilled and refrigerated food items.

  • Prefer eating wheat in place of rice and cow’s milk in place of buffalo’s milk.
