A Miramar-based (VMM-161) USMC Osprey at rest prior to its flight demonstration at the Los Angeles County Airshow. In December 2009, HMM-161 became the first of ten west coast helicopter squadrons to transition to the MV-22 Osprey and changed their name to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 161. The Marines have been operational with the MV-22 since June 2007, replacing the Boeing CH-46 Sea Knight which will be retired by 2019. A total of 360 MV-22 aircraft is planned for the USMC fleet. The V-22’s speed and range enable personnel and cargo to be transported faster and farther than is possible with legacy helicopters. Nikon D7100 w/18-200mm.
