Here is a Royal Jordanian Air Force AH-1F Cobra displayed outside the Martyr’s Memorial Museum in Amman, Jordan. In 1982 Jordan received congressional approval for the initial purchase of 24 AH-1F Cobras. The AH-1 was the backbone of the United States Army’s attack helicopter fleet, but has been replaced by the AH-64 Apache. First flown in 1965, the Cobra was developed using the engine, transmission and rotor system of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois. The U.S. Army retired the AH-1 from active service in March 1999, offering them to NATO allies. 43 of these Cobras are currently in service with the Royal Jordanian Air Force, thanks to several modernization programs. This Cobra features air intake shields designed to prevent rocket exhaust ingestion.
