Being John Malkovich: 25th Anniversary- Step Right On Through This Door
Quick Take: A quirky masterpiece. 1999 was such a strong year for film. An embarrassment of riches. It is so nice to know Spize Jonzes’s odd little comedy has audio description. It so totally needs it. From the floor with the lowered ceilings, to all the insanity of finding a door that leads you into the mind of John Malkovich, the amount of things that wouldn’t make sense without it is long. There is a scene where everyone looks like John Malkovich, facially, but it is all these different body types. That scene was really well described. I’d like to think, based on the Oscar nomination for Jonze, that if we had the expanded list of 10 Best Picture nominees that this would have landed there. It did garner Catherine Keener a Supporting Actress nomination, and really helped to build credibility for John Cusack and Cameron Diaz, two people who still need nominations. If you like your movies to not feel like anything else, this is a recommend. Has it stood the test of time? I don’t think quite as much as some of the other 1999 movies, but it certainly isn’t out of the game. It just obviously doesn’t have the same profile as The matrix. For more, check out my video.
