Book Description:
In the blink of an eye Megan Johnson’s perfect life turns into a nightmare. Her beloved husband mysteriously dies in a car crash and her fourteen-year-old son, Tristan, runs away with a diabolical cult leader named Vincent Hellion. Her world is spiraling to destruction. She leans on her husband’s best friend, Rhett Foster, for support and help. But when feelings she thought she never had for Rhett begin to surface and unknown psychic powers possess her, she becomes more confused than ever. She tries to push her feelings for Rhett aside and focus on her visions to save her son before it’s too late.
Rhett Foster has loved Megan for so long. But he never confessed his feelings to her because his best friend was her husband. Now that her husband is dead, he struggles with his conscience. Should he tell Megan how he really feels or should he honor his best friend's memory?
Megan's desperate quest to find and free her son sets them both on a path of love, danger, and renewal. If they return, their lives will be changed forever.
Excerpt:
Megan closed the door and leaned on it. She began to cry. Fatigue and the doctor’s words took their toll on her.
Rhett hugged her and caressed her long hair. "You heard what the doctor said? Tristan is going to be all right."
She sniffled. "But what if he gets worse? Mark and he were so close. He lost his whole world a few days ago."
"He still has you," Rhett said.
"Yeah, but what if he doesn’t let me in? What if he won’t let me help him and support him? He’s a teenager now, Rhett. At his age, who knows how he will react."
Rhett stared into her eyes, which she knew were watery, red, and puffy. "Then I’m here. Granted, my relationship with Tristan isn’t anywhere as close as his relationship had been with his dad, but we are still close. If he won’t confide in you, then I’ll try. The kid is tough. You and Mark hit the jackpot with him. He’ll be okay."
"I hope you’re right, Rhett."
He pulled out a compact pouch of tissues from his suit pocket. "Here you go."
She smiled, wiped her teary eyes, and jokingly said, "Thanks, do you have any mascara in there, too?"
He put his hand in his pocket to check. "No, just a small lint remover. Care to use it?"
They both laughed at his joke. Then Megan felt a twinge of guilt for experiencing a happy emotion when she buried her husband just a few hours before. She turned serious. "Why is it that you always know what to say or do? It’s like you can read my mind."
He smiled as he raised his left eyebrow. "That’s because we’ve known each other almost all our lives."
"That’s true. There’s nothing we don’t know about each other. We have no secrets. You’re like the big brother I always wanted."
Looking up into the air, he nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I know. I know. You always say that."
"But it’s true. You’ve always been there for me, and for Mark." A yawn escaped her lips. "What am I thinking right now?"
Rhett winked as he spoke. "Okay, okay, I get the hint. I’ll go now." With genuine concern, he continued, "Are you going to be okay?"
"Yes, I think I’ll go to bed early."
He opened the door. "I’ll call you tomorrow from work. Bye." He kissed her cheek and left.
* * * *
As Rhett closed the door behind him, he rubbed his nose. Megan’s soft locks had tickled his cheek. He could still smell her strawberry scented shampoo. He thought about what she had just said as he stood on her porch. "We have no secrets," she’d uttered. She was wrong.
He had a secret that he kept from her all of these years. He wondered if he should ever tell her the truth. Their friendship would be at great risk if he did.
Rhett got into his car, put on the radio, and tuned it to his favorite station. The Wind Beneath My Wings was playing. He had a flashback of when he and Megan had been seventeen. They were dancing to this song at their prom.
Since they didn’t have any dates, they decided to go with each other. A smile formed on his face as he remembered how they both had two left feet. A spectacle they had made of themselves on the dance floor. Ah, the fun times they had. Megan was certainly someone special. How boring his life would have been if she had never come into it.
MY REVIEW OF BEGOTTEN: BOOK ONE OF THE FORSAKEN PROPHECIES BY GIOVANNA LAGANA
He drove off, vowing to protect her and her son in these troubled times. He owed it to Mark and to himself. Begotten: Book 1 of The Forsaken Prophecies by Giovanna Lagana
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Begotten: Book One of The Forsaken Prophesies by Giovanna Lagana is a 2013 Mallet Publishing release. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Tristan is having weird dreams and nightmares. He's lost his appetite and is quiet and withdrawn causing his parents, Megan and Mark to worry. Finally, Mark decides to have a little talk with Tristan to see if they can figure out what is bothering him. But, when Mark fails to pick Tristan up after school, both he and Megan feel uneasy. Sadly, Mark was killed in an accident and now Tristan is more confused than ever. Only three weeks after his father's death, Tristan disappears.
Megan was already fragile after Mark's death and then Tristan began having more problems and now he has disappeared. If it weren't for her best friend, Rhett , Megan would just fall to pieces. Thankfully, Rhett is there and has even put her in touch with a private detective to help find Tristan. What Megan doesn't know is that Rhett has been in love with her forever. Now, that Mark is gone and Megan is leaning on Rhett more than ever, it is becoming more difficult for him to hide his feelings.
Meanwhile, Tristan has fallen prey to a cult leader with diabolical plans and intends to use Tristan's psychic abilities to achieve his goals. Tristan isn't the only one with special abilities. It appears he has inherited his gift from his mother, whose talents have been dormant for many years. Now that her son is missing, Megan's abilities have resurfaced. Can she and Tristan manage to win a classic battle of good versus evil?
Begotten is a paranormal romance, but there a elements, in my opinion of the horror genre . Seriously scary Vincent is one evil dude. He is charismatic and appeals to Tristan's troubled mind and he takes advantage of his vulnerablity. Completely under Vincent's spell and believing all the lies he is told, Tristan agrees to help Vincent obtain his goals. He has no idea what that will cost him.
The romance between Megan and Rhett is a sweet one. There are some things that come out about Mark and his wishes for Megan that helps her open up her heart to Rhett in a romantic way. I loved Rhett and I think he will be perfect for Megan.
I thought the story was well thought out and the characters were easy to relate to. I don't know if the author intended the reader to see a deeper meaning in the story other than what was on the surface, but I thought I could see a little symbolism or allegory woven into the battle with Vincent.
I think this story would have a wide appeal to paranomal romance lovers to readers of horror and fantasy.
Overall this one a B.
MY INTERVIEW WITH GIOVANNA LAGANA Thanks so much Giovanna for stopping by today! Welcome to The Book Review!1) When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
My grandmother and my dad were storytellers. I loved sitting and listening to their stories they told us as kids, so the passion for storytelling came to me when I was very young. Then it naturally turned into a passion for being an editor and a writer as I grew older.
2) What other books have your written?
I’ve written several short stories and poems, which have either been published in chapbooks, anthologies, magazines or e-zines. I’ve also written two picture books and two middle reader books.
3) What authors have influenced you the most?
Oh, so many have. But I’d have to say J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, and perhaps James Patterson, for the way they develop their characters and their plots and of course their awesome and ingenious narrating styles.
4) What is your favorite season?
Fall- Because of the beautiful and colorful foliage and because Halloween is in October and my birthday is in late November.
Favorite dessert?
Mille-feuille!!!!
Coffee or tea?
Both. And I love to try different types.
Dogs or cats?
I love them both, but unfortunately I’m extremely allergic to them. So much so to dogs that I can’t even remain in the same room with one for more than an hour or two without having problems breathing or my eyes swelling and itching.
E-Books or physical books?
Both, but I seem to be steering more towards reading e-Books nowadays simply because it’s easier to get the library books I want via my local online library.
5) Where can readers contact you?
E-mail would be the best bet at: [email protected]
I enjoy hearing from readers, getting their feedback on my stories and characters.
6) What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m taking a breather from writing. I’ve got a lot of other projects on my plate that I want to focus on for the moment. But once I’ve caught up on these, then I’ll probably get back to finishing the second installment in the Forsaken Prophecies series.
7) What are reading now?
I’m reading Intervention a medical thriller from bestselling author Robin Cook. It’s quite good, but I’ve got to admit that the hypochondriac in me is resurfacing because of it.
8) Do you have a favorite quote you would like to share?
It depends on the day, but today I’d say this one fits quite well.
"Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions."
