After working on many small paintings on paper and canvas panels, I started a new commission for a 60" x 46" abstract painting on canvas. After working small, it's a bit of a shock to discover how long it takes to cover a large surface again.
In this first step, I wanted to establish the basic colors and composition, as well as to fill in the background color, shades of unbleached titanium. I also wanted to begin right away working in an impressionist style with small overlapping brushstrokes.
