Beginning Foreground in Tall Abstract Painting

By Abstractartbylt @artbylt

I painted the background in this new abstract painting with darker blues on the edges, moving to lighter colors toward the top center, with cadmium yellow light as a center focus.  For the foreground, I decided to try darker colors from the top down and bottom up, meeting about two-thirds of the way up.

I began with a deep magenta, then prussian blue and ultramarine blue.  I drew lines across the canvas, creating small shapes I could fill in later.  When I finished drawing the lines for one color, I took a small wet paintbrush and filled the shapes in, leaving them translucent so that the background would show through.  Where I thought it necessary, I added more paint to the mixture.

This is a time-consuming process.  I will continue with lighter blues tomorrow.
