Beginning a New Abstract Painting on Paper

By Abstractartbylt @artbylt

In this new abstract painting on paper, I started with Pyrole orange, painting it on with a brush.  I began with five shapes--a large block of color in the center of the paper, and one smaller shape in each of the four corners.  This is not a typical composition for me, but I am experimenting with these paper paintings.

Next I painted Pyrole red around the orange shapes and added some Indian yellow and cadmium yellow light. Then I painted in the background with parchment, blending it with the other colors as I did. I also added a bit of parchment to the center of each block of Pyrole orange.

I didn't particulary like the composition here, or the colors.  I drew lines with raw umber to add some life to it, then blended the brown with a brush.  The brown did help give the image more movement, but I have to label this one an "ugly painting."

I haven't signed any of these paper paintings yet.  When I finish them all (a total of 20), I'll review them to see which need more work, a signature, or are beyond redemption.
