In case you were wondering what I mean by “Version 2″, this is our second review of the Boulevard Brewing Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale. The first review of this beer was written up by Limpd back in February. Since he already covered the origins of this beer, I will skip all of the background information and point you in the direction of his review. If you scroll down to the comments in Limpd’s review, you will notice that Boulevard beers are currently unavailable in Philadelphia and New Jersey. The closest place to get any of Boulevard’s offerings is State Line Liquors in Elkton, MD.
Although Elkton, MD is less than an hour away from us, given our non-blogging activities (i.e. work, kids, and family), finding the time for a beer run to Maryland can be a bit of a challenge. As luck would have it, I was able to acquire three twelve ounce bottles of Tank 7 via a brief Twitter exchange with the Beer Lass (aka Suzy Woods of Allagash Brewing), after finding out that she was at State Line Liquors last Thursday afternoon. Beer Lass was kind enough to meet me at Capogiro last Friday so that we could complete our “cash for beer” exchange. In addition to the three Tank 7s, she also picked me up a bottle of the Boulevard Long Strange Tripel, and an Allagash tulip glass. Four bottles of ”ungettable” beer and a lovely glass for $10? I’d say that’s an EXCELLENT deal!
And now for my review…
- Appearance: Slightly cloudy, pale golden color. Lots of fast rising bubbles that rise to form a thick, fluffy head. Dissipates slowly and settles down to a thin layer of foam. Moderate lacing.
- Aroma: Orange zest. A hint of clove. Honey. Tea biscuits.
- Taste: Smooth and creamy mouthfeel with lots of small bubbles that pop and fizzle on your tongue. Has that Farmhouse Ale dryness that reminds me of a crisp white wine or Champagne. Lemon/orange zest, clove and other spices are easy to pick out, but they are never overwhelming. Crisp, clean, and somewhat astringent finish. Slightly tart and lemony aftertaste.
- ABV: 8%
Limpd was absolutely correct about this beer. While I had no funk issues, I concur with his high drinkability and deliciousness assessment. I also recommend that you take it easy when drinking the Boulevard Tank 7 on its own. While it is most definitely smooth and easy drinking, given it’s 8% ABV, this beer could sneak up on you if you’re not careful.
