Beer Review – Palm Breweries “Speciale Belge” (Palm)

I recently stopped in at Kress Wine in Cherry Hill and hit their import wall for a bottle of Palm. Palm is the eponymous product from the Palm brewery. The brewery traces its history to a village brewery in Steenhuffel, Belgium in 1747. Today, the Palm brewery produces Palm, Rodenbach, Steenbrugge, Brugge, Estaminet, and Boon, and has grown to be the largest producer of specialty beers in Belgium and Holland.

Here is what the brewery has to say about their Palm:

“Speciale Belge” is one of the better Belgian beers of the early 20th century. This smooth-drinking, amber-coloured top-fermentation beer has a sensible alcohol content. Special PALM malts determine its honey-like mellowness and PALM’s own selected yeasts give it a fruity yeast aroma. Fine aroma hops from Kent afford subtle harmony. PALM is the absolute number one “BELGIAN AMBER BEER”.

I found the Palm to have the following characteristics…

  • Appearance: Clear amber with light foam and good lacing.
  • Aroma: Sweet, fruity, malty and a hint of hops.
  • Taste: Nice mouthfeel. Light carbonation with a nice, slightly sweet finish.
  • ABV: 5.4%

This was an easy drinking beer. Not one of the best, but certainly session worthy.
