On recent trip to Cherry Hill Liquors, I picked up a bottle of Captain Lawrence Xtra Gold American Tripel Ale. Since I enjoyed their Captain’s Reserve Imperial IPA, I thought I would try yet another Craft Beer offering from the Captain Lawrence Brewing Company.

From the Captain Lawrence site:

This beer is the result of the marriage between two very distinct beer styles; the Belgian Tripel & American IPA. We have taken the best qualities from both styles and allowed them to shine through. The fruity and spicy notes from the imported Belgian yeast strain & the pungent flavors and aromas of the American grown Amarillo hops flow seamlessly together to create this flavorful ale.  Straight from the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

I found the Xtra Gold to have the following characteristics.

  • Appearance: A little cloudy and golden. Lots of foam and lacing.
  • Aroma: Citrus, grapefruit, coriander and hops.
  • Taste: Smooth, refreshing with an incredibly well balanced blend of fruit, spice and hops and a great finish.
  • ABV: 10%

I really enjoyed this beer (I would put it just a notch below Aviator’s Devil’s Tramping Ground Tripel), but with an ABV of 10%, I wouldn’t recommend it as a session beer, but I would heartily recommend it as a single beer to go with a good meal. The Captain Lawrence site suggests chicken or fish dishes, or possibly with an appetizer.
