As I have said on numerous occasions, the most rewarding aspect of all this blogging business has been the opportunity to interact with other likeminded people across all of the Social Media platforms. While a good bit of silliness and hilarity ensues on most occasions, there is also a great deal of Craft Beer and Whisky education going on. I wholeheartedly believe that there is no better way to learn about a new Craft Beer or Whisky than by hearing about it from someone whose taste and opinion you trust and respect. And that is EXACTLY how I learned about Brew Dog’s 5 A.M Saint…
I first heard about the Brew Dog 5 A.M. Saint “Iconoclastic Red Beer” via a review by Rebecca of The Bake and Brew blog that she published way back in May of 2012. Since this beer has been on my “must try” list for quite some time, I didn’t hesitate to pick up a bottle for a long overdue review when I saw that I could buy a single as part of a mixed six pack during a recent beer run.
Here are what the always entertaining lads of Brew Dog have to say about their 5 A.M. Saint:
And now for my impressions of this beer…
- Appearance: Really interesting color on this beer. It’s brown, red, and orange all at the same time! As far as the suds are concerned, this beer tops off at about a quarter inch and dissipates pretty slowly.
- Aroma: An interesting blend of sweet malts and piney hops. I’m getting raisins, candied orange peel, some pine or evergreen, and a hint of funkiness in the background.
- Taste: Lightly carbonated with a mouthfeel that leans a bit on the watery side. Much more mellow than I was expecting. Dried fruit starts things off with a bit of hop bitterness showing up at mid-palate. As you approach the finish, a bit of lemony citrus makes an appearance. The finish is somewhat dry and astringent.
- ABV: 5%
This is only my second experience with Brew Dog, and I am happy to report that it’s a good one (my first experience was during a mini tasting session with The Alemonger, but I can’t for the life of me remember which beer I had since this happened at least 3 years ago). While 5 A.M. Saint is far from a mind blowing beer, it has an easy going (thanks to it’s relatively low octane) yet flavorful quality that makes it quite session worthy, and it would probably make for a fine summer beer. I’ll be sure to revisit this beer once the warmer months roll back around.
