The Plot: Picking up where we kinda sorta last saw them, Beavis and Butthead are still very much on a mission to score. But also, this time, they are on a mission to space. Because, why not?
What Works: I can remember being in high school and trying to find ways to watch Beavis and Butthead. My local cable provider shockingly didn’t carry MTV, so anytime I was ever on vacation, or visiting family somewhere that had a cable package not sponsored by the church, I was seeking out everything from Beavis to Cartman. I actually got to see Beavis and Butthead Do America in theatres, which as a teenager feeling very restricted by my cable provider, felt like a win. Then I had the movie on VHS, and I still have it on DVD. I even checked out the reboot they tried to do about 10 years ago.
So, yeah, when I found out that we were getting another movie. I was excited. I know a reboot is coming, but I didn’t know this movie was coming until a week before. It did not disappoint.
It did exactly what it needed to do, taking these two iconic characters from the 90’s and bringing them forward to the 2020’s, where technology is totally different. Since they leap forward in time, they don’t know what a smart phone is, or who Siri is. They learn about white privilege, and still find amusement in the stupidest of activities. And, just like the first film, they’ve totally misinterpreted yet again, and they believe that this mission they are on is just to get this one lady to score with them.
It’s been a minute since I’ve laughed out loud this many times during a movie. I thought I was losing my touch, giving a chuckle or a smirk, and chalking it up to me having seen too many films. Or the overused excuse of getting old.
But no, fresh content from mike Judge reminded me that not only can I laugh out loud for the duration of a film, I can laugh at the same jokes I would have laughed at some 25 years ago. It’s strange to think that these two characters have somehow become iconic cultural touchstones of the media world, but watching them “Do” the Universe was like sitting down to a dinner full of comfort foods. I recognized everything on the table, and saw all my favorite recipes. That made it worth the wait.
The Blind Perspective: For whatever reason, Paramount Plus actually let me watch the entire credits for this (though they weren’t very long) and nobody was credited for having anything to do with the audio description. That being said, the entirety of the movie was well described, save for the descriptions of Beavis and Butthead. Aside from their hair color, there was a lot missing about their standard never changing appearance, almost like the film expected you to already know who they are and what they look like. That means, this film only is intended to appeal to existing fans, and not new ones born since these two went off the air. And I think that’s a mistake.
Final Thoughts: Not sorry at all to say, I loved this movie.
