Beautiful Things of the Day: 5 Vintage Posters and Postcards (or) Santa?
By Thewilderthings @TheWilderThingsSo I realize it's the wrong time of year for a vintage poster of Santa Claus. But I also realize it's never the wrong time of year for a funny advertizement with a horrible pun, though I don't even know if you could call the slogan above a pun. On what word is it even supposed to be a play? Invigorating? It's just so bad that it's so, so good.
I found the images here at a wonderful little store in Camden (right next to Sugar Tools, actually), called Goose River Exchange. The place is filled with old posters, cut out advertizements from old magazines (like the questionable ad above), postcards that fill what seem to be millions of shoeboxes, and beautiful old books and maps (more after the jump).
When my friend Hilary was visiting a few weekends ago, we went into the store and pawed through the posters for hours. We're moving into an apartment in Cambridge in the fall together (!!!), so it's highly likely that we'll go back soon and hunt and gather some great things to put on our walls. After all, you can never have too many pictures.
I got really into the book above, which is the score for a musical called "How's Every Little Thing in Dixie?" I can't think of a better title for anything...I'd name my boat that (well, if I had one...again, RIP Steve the Boston Whaler).
I loved the graphics of this old map of Mount Desert Island. The colors are so bold and somehow dated.
I bought the postcard above. It's from Provincetown, MA, and the address of the store from which it came only has a P.O. Box. I wondered why at first that seemed so strange to me, and I realized it's because now every store includes its website on whatever it is it sells. #simplertimes #notreallyeverytimeiscomplicated
I also had to buy this one, because it's a photo from the '70s of a sloop sailing past Curtis Island, the island that sits at the mouth of Camden harbor. I played many a game of capture the flag on that island, so it's pretty near and dear. Though nothing comes close to Indian Island.
I'm going to go back to Goose River soon and hunt for more awesome finds. I'll be sure to share them with you when I do!
