A family-run chip shop in Lincoln has been named as the best in the UK- Burton Road Fish and Chip Shop beat thousands of other chippies to land the Choice Chip Awards title for producing the nation’s best chips.
The competition involved 35,000 fish and chip fans voting for their favorite shop.
Owner Des Anastasou, 53, who runs the business with his partner Lesley Graves, 46, said the secret to their success was thickly cut chips which are prepared fresh each day.
Des, who has been in the fish and chip business for over 35 years commented:
“We only use the best local Maris Piper potatoes and have used the same supplier for 30 years.
“We also cut our chips thickly so they absorb less oil and all of our chips are freshly prepared every day.
“Everyone can make chips but few can make great chips – there is quite a technique to it.
“We are delighted and must thank all of our customers who voted and our fantastic team of staff. It’s a good feeling to be recognised as the best.”
Des dreamed of running his own chip shop as a kid after helping out at his aunt’s chip shop in London at weekends and during school holidays.
The couple have owned Burton Road Fish and Chip Shop for 10 years and have a team of 12 full and part-time staff.
The Choice Chip Awards, run by the Potato Council to mark the start of Chip Week 2013, rewards the tastiest chips being served across the UK.
The competition results were published as a survey showed Brits are still passionate about the perfect chip, with four out of ten people choosing to travel to a particular chip shop instead of the one closest to them.
The survey also revealed around one in five people believe chips are more British than the Queen.
The poll also found almost eight in ten of us believe fish and chips are an important part of our national culture and identity.
Fish and chips is also the food we miss most whilst abroad.
Two thirds of those who took part in the poll said they would recommend fish and chips to a foreign tourist visiting the UK.
Potato Council spokesman, Caroline Evans, said:
“Seeing how people are prepared to travel to their favorite chippy explains why so many voted in the Choice Chip Awards this year – a new record.
“They clearly feel very strongly about this great British tradition and are prepared to take the trouble to vote for their favorite and put them on the map.
“Chip Week is a great opportunity for people to visit their local chippy – or make the trip to their favorite one.”
