Sri Lanka’s basketball community is mourning the death of Janaka Fernando, who died at the age of 43 after a brief illness. Janaka, a leading referee in the country for more than a decade, had officiated in several leading competitions and his services were sought for overseas competitions as well.

A product of Maharagama Central, Janaka first represented Colombo Basketball Club and then joined Sri Lanka Army. He went on to captain the Army basketball team. He was with Army for nearly two decades.

Known as balanced and a fair man, he was immensely popular among the community for his common touch and easy going attitude. Having obtained his refereeing license from the international body FIBA in 2011, he was making steady progress in his career until his untimely death on Tuesday.

His remains lie at 388/6, Peter Samarathunga Mawatha, Arewwala, Pannipitiya. The cortege leaves residence today (Thursday)at 4pm.

May he attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana.
