Basic Guide 101: How To Find A Domain Name For Your Small Business?

Posted on the 17 January 2019 by Lenalenson

As a small business owner, you probably have a bunch of things to handle. However, it is still important that you spend some time before selecting a domain name. The domain name is basically the name of your website, which people will type to access your business. It’s the focal point of your online marketing campaign and eventually will help in branding. If want to create your own website, the first step is to select and register a domain name, and in this post, we have a basic guide that will make things simpler.

Find an easy to remember name

Let’s say your business is called Toronto Glass Repair Company. There are probably dozens of companies with the same name, and chances are high that www.torontoglassrepaircompany.com is a taken domain. Also, the name itself is too long for someone to remember and type. The domain name should never be generic or too long. If you can find a name that resonates with your business, go for it, or else, find something that’s close to the location or at least has some relevance to a keyword that matches your company the best.

Consider the extension

Many people argue that in a world where most known domains are taken, finding a .com domain is not necessary. While they are not wrong, a .com domain is still the most popular choice, and it’s easy to remember. When we think of a website, we think of .com. However, we understand that .com domains might not be available, and since we are talking about small businesses here, going for .co, .biz, .net and .location is not a bad idea. For example, if your company is located in Canada, you can settle for a .ca domain.

Avoid trademark issues

Note that buying domains that seem similar to some of the highly popular or competitive domains can bring legal issues. Also, you are trying to have a clear brand image for your small business, and therefore, it makes no sense to select a domain that resembles to competitors or may seem like a known one.

Finally, pronounce your domain. It should be easy to say, remember and write, and for that, compromising on the extension is never a bad idea. If the preferred domain is available, get it registered right away, because the demand for right domains continues to increase. You can also get bundle domains for a discount.
