Barbie, Boss Beauties work together to try to get more women into Web3

The two companies have created a crossover NFT collection with multiple rarity tiers and real-world benefits.

Mattel has partnered with women-led Web3 brand Boss Beauties to launch a line of on-chain virtual collectibles commemorating the numerous professions undertaken by the iconic toy figure since its debut in 1959.

The Boss Beauties x Barbie collection features NFTs designed in Boss Beauties’ signature style that pay tribute to Barbie’s 250-year career. The initial release will include artists, astronauts, CEOs, doctors, veterinarians, and pilots, among others.

The items will be sold in packs of four for $25. They will be available on Flow, the blockchain for NFTs that is used by NBA Top Shot. They cannot be bought with cryptocurrencies.

Mattel says that this low price point and the easy way to check out will make it easier for Barbie fans to join Web3. Boss Beauties’ goal has always been to bring the next million women and girls into the Web3 world.

“As Barbie continues her journey in the metaverse, we are proud to partner with Boss Beauties to empower women and collectors to explore Web3 through our virtual collection,” Lisa McKnight, Mattel’s Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, said in a statement.

There will be NFTs of different rarities in the Boss Beauties x Barbie virtual collection packs. These will let you get digital and real-world benefits. Each pack will have two “common” cards and one “uncommon” card. The fourth card could be “super rare,” “ultra rare,” or “exclusive.”

“Ultra Rare” NFTs, which make up only 0.67 percent of the supply, can be used to get a limited-edition Barbie “Career of the Year” doll set. “Exclusive” NFTs, which make up only 0.47 percent of the supply, can be used to get a ticket to the “World of Barbie” show in Los Angeles.

The collection will also include benefits that have not yet been disclosed, such as access to additional physical goods and virtual Career Conversations with women leaders from a variety of professional disciplines. Early access purchasers will also receive a surprise virtual collectible featuring an exclusive career trait that will be disclosed in July, the same month that the forthcoming Warner Bros. Barbie film starring Margot Robbie is scheduled to debut.

Mattel has previously released a range of Cryptoys as well as a line of Barbie NFTs created in collaboration with French fashion designer Balmain. While Mattel’s appetite for integrating blockchain-based products with its brands does not appear to have diminished since last year, the company’s desire to associate those products with Web3-native terms may have waned: the Boss Beauties x Barbie collection is referred to exclusively as a series of virtual collectibles and not as NFTs.
