Story: Barbarians starts when Adam (Rheon) and Eva (Moreno) welcome friends Lucas (Cullen) and Chloe (Spiridonov) to a dinner party. Adam has seen Lucas move onto a more successful career.  Causing jealousy between the two friends.

As the night unfolds, the truths from the past between the characters come out. Lucas has his own reasons for visiting, while Adam has his own secrets that could ruin their friendships. Only for a home invasion for masked figures changing the whole dynamic of the night.

Verdict on Barbarians

Barbarians is a horror thriller that follows two couples that clash over a dinner party, only to find themselves dealing with an invasion. The story does feel very slow moving, not wanting to get to the point of the dinner quick enough. By the time it does the sudden home invasion doesn’t get enough time to flourish being over before it gets started.

This does all feel like it wanted to be more only for it to get caught up between two sides of an idea. Not enough focus is placed on the home invasion and the dinner party doesn’t come off as that interesting.

The performances are strong enough, despite not giving the actors enough time to shine. Having the isolated mansion and mysterious statue being involved in the location does help with the idea of the unknown.

Final Thoughts Barbarians is a flat horror that never seems to get going.
