Cosy and welcoming theater bar in the West End

Websters Bar and Bistro is located inside Websters Theatre, which used to be Lansdowne Parish Church. It’s a beautiful A-listed Gothic Revival Church and was built in 1863 and designed by John Honeyman (Click here to find out all about him). Featuring stained glass windows by Alf Webster, for whom the theater is named. The theater hosts an 188 seat theater and community space.

We hadn’t been in for a while, not since we visited a show there possibly . The bar area then had potential but needed a lot of money and love. Thankfully this love and attention (not to mention money!) arrived and Websters Bar and Bistro can help contribute to the survival of the church as a community asset.

We popped in for a drink, however they also serve food (we’ll be back for that I’m sure!)

Just like Cottiers (another one of the Four Acres Charitable Trust venues), Websters has kept the church architecture but built on it with a reclaimed gantry from a local chemist, some atmospheric lighting and pew-like seating.

Mr Foodie had been already to see the fire on, I’m looking forward to huddling against one soon. We loved the look, small pieces of what was there just like scraping back the modernisation when you move into an old flat and get to see who has been in before. The wall stencilling was very Greek Thomson, as was a popular style in that day.

We settled down with a Scottish Mojito. The smell was just like leather – ah laphroig. Mr Foodie was very happy with this interpretation. It may even convert him onto more gin!
