Baldur’s Gate 3 Tactician Difficulty: A True Test of Skill and Strategy

Posted on the 10 July 2023 by Jitender Sharma

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a highly anticipated RPG game from Larian Studios. It comes with 3 difficulty settings – explorer, balanced, and tactician. The tactician difficulty is supposedly designed to separate the seasoned adventurers from the rest. With increased stats, enhanced AI, and surprising twists, the tactician mode is likely to make you really struggle in combat as well as non combat situations.

During the final Panel From Hell event, creative director Swen Vincke and senior combat designer Matt Holland shed light on the intricacies of Tactician mode. Holland says the tactician mode is the ultimate test. As usual, the difficulty level bolsters enemy health and accuracy while also ramping up their decision-making capabilities and AI.

Holland and his team have created unexpected surprises within battle scenarios to intensify the challenge and keep players on their toes. A simple skirmish when played with tactician setting takes a dramatic turn. You discover strategically placed explosive barrels and oil. The battlefield is transformed into a perilous environment. Enemies use more powerful weapons and the situation often spirals out of control. The foes exhibit more intelligent decision-making. They target vulnerable characters and break concentration spells.

Players need to study and understand the rule sets very well if they want to succeed in the tactician mode. You cannot just rely on bruteforce to win. The creative director has thrown an open challenge to the audiences saying, “you really need to start getting every single advantage that you can, because otherwise you’re going to get obliterated.” He went so far as to say, “I know you’re all badass, I know you’re all going to play on Tactician because you can handle it, and then you’re going to start crying, and then you’re going to say the game is bad. It’s not our fault – it’s you!
