Bad News Club is the latest signing to the prestigious paradYse Records (Marika Hackman and Spring King have also featured on their roster) and ‘The Painter’ is a stunning introduction to his heartfelt and intimate work. This is the very first take of the acoustic song, recorded onto an iPhone, and it has a lo-fi and haunting atmosphere that captures elements of both Elliott Smith and early Villagers, with the lyrics being subtly powerful: ‘A painter waits by the bathroom door but the light starts seeping out’. Following this are musings and observations about a blank canvas and easels being kept out of sight before the crushing admission that ‘I don’t know where she goes when I’m not around’.
