Background Or "Undercoating" Gives Birth to Abstract Painting

A stimulating backgound or undercoating is a great way to begin an abstract painting.  It allows me to play off what is already there, and adds depth to the final image. Even if I end up obliterating every trace of the original background, it is still part of the history of the painting.  Because of this background, that painting emerged.

Here's a very rough initial stage of a new painting I'm working on:
