Story: Back to Black starts as we meet Amy Winehouse (Abela) at the early performances of her career. Her family, Mitch (Marsan) and Cynthia (Manville) support her pursuit. It doesn’t take long until Nick Shymansky (Buchanan) signs her to their record label.
However, Amy is not like most musicians, she won’t change who she is for additional fame. It leads to her clashing with the record label and trying to find herself. Amy dives into her personal life away from the stage, which leads to her finding inspiration, but falling down the wrong holes, changing who she once was as her addictions take over.
Verdict on Back to Black
Back to Black is a biopic following the life and death of Amy Winehouse. It follows her early beginning and struggles with addiction that consumed her. All leading her to become the iconic singer she became, unlike many of the same era.
This movie does everything you expect a biopic to achieve by telling the personal battles Amy suffered with. However, it fails to do enough to explain why she decided to change or show the support blanket which was there from the early days. It has moments where people in the business challenge her to change, only for her not to want things to change and in the next scene, she changes them. No reason why she changed. We get the warning signs of addiction and the failure of anyone to do enough to stop her from falling off the wagon. In the end, it leaves more questions than answers and most of them are wondering why nobody else supported her in her time of need.
Where to Watch
a JustWatchFinal Thoughts – Back to Black is a by-the-book biopic.
