Back from Quebec: My Summer Vacation

By Curlygeek04 @curlygeek04

P1020312For some reason I always get “bloggers’ block” when I get home from a vacation. Why is that? I have no idea. I’m great about setting up posts while I’m away, and then I figure I’ll just pick back up once I get home. But when I get back I just can’t concentrate.

I’m supposed to be reading for my summer class, but instead I’ve spent two days working on a review of Redeployment by Phil Klay. Amazing book — but one of the toughest reviews I’ve written (and maybe the longest). Mainly because I really want to do justice this book, and I want to get the subject matter right.

So in the meantime, here are a few pics from my vacation. We went to Montreal to see the USA play Germany in the Women’s World Cup semifinals, then went on to Quebec City (the husband prefers no family photos on the blog, so you’re getting landscapes).

Some highlights of our trip:

  • Seeing our team win! Our audience was mostly USA fans, and it was great to see so many girls in the audience. Plus they went on to win the World Cup.

  • The Montmorency Falls

  • Eating fresh strawberries on Ile D’Orleans.
  • Touring the Citadel, walking on old city walls, and seeing a cannon fired.

Speaking French — or trying to!
  • Drinking wine from a hotel vending machine with my sister (it’s the little things).
  • And most of all, spending the week with my amazing nieces.

We did a lot of sightseeing, but honestly, I wouldn’t say sightseeing is why I would go to these cities. Some of the museums were pretty disappointing, as was local delicacy “poutine” (fries with gravy and cheese curds: blech). It was more fun for its European atmosphere and the cobble-stoned winding streets.

I’m working on reviews of The Interestings, The Grand Sophy, and Us. And I’m hoping to review The Hungry Girl Diet Cookbook at some point. I just started House of Mirth and just finished a Regency mystery, Cut to the Quick by Kate Ross. That puts me on the fourth book of my summer TBR list.

Hope you’re enjoying the summer! It’s my favorite time of year.
