Three irresponsible and emotionally unstable bridesmaids reunite for the wedding of their high school friend Becky (Rebel Wilson). Becky, who happens to be overweight, was dubbed "pig face" in high school. Her three s0-called friends haven't outgrown making jokes at her expense. It is in that spirit that they pull a prank that leads to inadvertantly tearing Becky's wedding gown. The rest of the night is a combination of a drinking- and drug-fest and a mad scramble to repair the dress in time for the wedding the next morning.
This movie has been hailed as an entertaining comedy and an interesting character study, but I didn't see it. I often enjoy over-the-top, deplorably immoral characters -- I throughly enjoyed Jennifer Aniston's character in Horrible Bosses ("I want that dong, Dale!") But I honestly didn't find this trio of skanky, emotionally unstable, grown-up mean girls funny. If anything, I found then sad. Nor was I amused by the bachelors in the film, one of whom saw nothing wrong with having sex with a woman who was falling-down drunk.
Warning: Spoilers:I think we were supposed to observe character growth in Becky's three bridesmaids, but I didn't see it. Gena (Lizzy Caplan) reunites with her ex-boyfriend, with whom she'd broken up after he failed to come through for her during a sad, painful episode in their relationship. But other than the fact that they finally talked about what happened, their reunion didn't feel real to me. And the morning of the wedding finds Katie (Isla Fisher) barely pulling herself together after what appeared to be a histrionic, half-hearted suicide attempt. Regan (Kirsten Dunst) does show a moment of genuine affection and support for Becky right before she walks down the aisle, but it wasn't nearly enough to redeem the movie.End of Spoilers
"Making fun of the fat girl" humor just isn't funny. Rape and suicidal gestures certainly aren't funny. To me this movie felt cold and, at times, downright offensive. To be fair, many viewers enjoyed this flick, but for me it was more annoying and occasionally infuriating than engaging or entertaining.
