The most impressive garden that we visited in the Western Cape was Babylonstoren near Franschoek. It is based on the Great Supply Gardens that were established in the 17th century to provide passing ships with fresh fruit and vegetables. With the help of Patrice Taravella of Prieure d’Orsan, the owners have laid out a rigidly formal garden which is still less than a year old. It is astonishing, as is the delicious food in the restaurant.
