Autumn Planting Tips

By Simon Crowther @prestigeflower

Many people think that we only plant during the warmer months of the year. The truth is that there are a number of wonderful plants that can enjoy an early start during the autumn season. During these months, it's not only great for the plants, but also for the gardener. The temperatures are not nearly as high and it's easier to spend extra time outdoors.

When planting in autumn, your plants will enjoy the benefit of taking root before winter takes hold. Many pests disappear during the colder months which is great news for your whole garden. When you plant during this season, you need to make sure that you select the right plants. Spring bulbs are best planted in autumn because it will allow them to grow and bloom as soon as the temperatures warm up. The Dutch Iris, Darwin Hybrid Tulips, and Apricot Daffodils are all popular options to name just a few.

There are also a few plants that actually prefer the colder weather and they bloom in the winter rather than the hotter summer. Some examples of plants you can enjoy during this part of the year include the five-petaled pansy, certain snapdragons, and even jasmine. Remember to always check with a professional if you want to make sure that the conditions in your garden are suitable for the plants you wish to grow.

You can even plant various vegetables if you want to make the most of your garden. While the warmer months are often associated with growing a large variety of fruits and vegetables, you can still plant in the autumn months. Some examples include spinach, arugula, kae, carrots, cabbage, and cauliflower. Of course, it will depend on your preferences as well as how much space you have available.

Take some time to protect your garden before the winter by removing any unwanted plants or weeds and adding a layer of mulch. Fabric coverings help protect perennials from the harsher climate so that they will look their best again when the weather improves.
