AutoX, which is developing a fully autonomous stack, has been licensed to test autonomous vehicles with safety drivers since 2017. Currently, 62 companies have active authorization to test autonomous vehicles with safety drivers on California roads.
To qualify for a driverless test permit, companies must demonstrate proof of insurance or a bond of $ 5 million, verify that vehicles are capable of operating without a driver, meet federal vehicle safety standards motor or have an exemption from road safety of the National Highway Administration.
While AutoX has managed robotaxi pilots in California and China, the company has stated that its real goal is to license its technology to companies that want to manage their robotaxi fleets. He has been particularly active in China, although this driverless permit suggests that the company could also intensify its business in the United States.
AutoX opened an 80,000-square-foot Robotaxi Shanghai operations center in April, following a 2019 deal with municipal authorities to distribute 100 autonomous vehicles in the Jiading district. The vehicles in the fleet were assembled in a factory about 93 miles outside Shanghai.
The company managed a robotaxis fleet in Shenzhen through a pilot program launched in 2019 with BYD. In January, AutoX partnered with Fiat Chrysler to implement a robotaxis fleet for China and other Asian countries.
