There will be no more evening snacks for prisoners in Catalonia as part of a crackdown aimed at finding ways out of Spain’s economic crisis that is crippling the country.
Inmates in Catalonian jails will no longer receive the customary evening snack of pastries or fruit and this will save the country around 2 Million Euros per year said a regional justice department spokeswoman last Wednesday.
She also hinted that juvenile center inmates have been exempted from the austerity measures.
Nevertheless, the official, who remains anonymous, has stated that the inmates in Catalonian prisons would continue to enjoy three meals a day without a reduction in rations.
Prison guards have also been hit and the price of their meals have doubled to 6 euros in the crack down.
These are measures designed to alleviate some of the problems that Spain faces as the country has almost 25% unemployment figures and finds itself in a double-dip recession.
