With the end of summer and the new school year upon us, I’m feeling a renewed energy for advocacy. August held an exciting milestone, because Words I Wheel By had its one-year blogiversary. And now, it’s already time for my monthly round-up again. As always, I highly suggest pinning or bookmarking the round-up so you can come back to it whenever you have a few spare moments. Let me know what interested you the most, and if you think I missed anything!

Disability News

  • Gorgeous Male Model Strips To Reveal His Disability – This commercial for a disability organization called Scope in the United Kingdom is quite well done…and the eye-candy isn’t too bad, either!
  • Disability and the Japanese art of mastering chopsticks – I love that something so central to Japanese culture can be adapted, but I wonder why it took so long for this to happen. I hope it becomes more of a widespread thing!
  • Parents Sue for ‘Wrongful Birth’ – This is such a tough issue. I highly recommend reading to the end and then determining your thoughts.
  • A Medicare scam that just kept rolling – It irks me so much to think that adaptive equipment is part of a scam, but I admit this is an interesting read.
  • Here Is an Able-Bodied Man Who Identifies as a Man With a Disability – I have conflicting feelings about this, and was especially hit hard by this man’s point that disability is a “detriment” to others, but something he desires. What are your thoughts on this?
  • No, There Still Is No Connection Between Vaccines and Autism – Yes, this is still apparently news, and yes, I firmly believe that vaccines are important and no, they do not cause autism.

Disability Blog Posts

  • Untitled [On how to properly treat women with disabilities in medical settings] – A good friend of mine who wishes to remain anonymous wrote this piece after an awful experience and I’m on a mission to help her share it. Medical professionals, listen up…TREAT DISABLED PEOPLE LIKE PEOPLE.
  • My kid with special needs understands you, so don’t ask me—ask him – I love this post a million times over, because I cannot stress enough how important it is to communicate with a disabled person and not assume that they cannot understand or respond.
  • 5 Reasons Why Going on a Date With That Disabled Dude Will Totally Be Worth It – A fun and poignant read on dating and disabilities by a great advocate.
  • I Don’t Need Your Awareness – This is a crucial read to understand why attempts at “awareness” just don’t cut it.
  • Am I Obligated To Disclose My Invisible Disability? – Disclosing disabilities can be such a complex issue. Should you do it? Should you keep it to yourself? It’s a very personal decision, but here’s one take on it.
  • Comedian Francesca Martinez: ‘I’ve accepted my cerebral palsy – now I’m calling on others to join the revolution’ – This is a really fresh, honest, and entertaining read on self-acceptance.
  • Parents of people with disabilities- this is what we want to hear – Parent advocates can be the most solid, wonderful allies to the disability community, but they can also sometimes bring us down. I love how this piece addresses the need for that to change.
