National Waffle Day/National Waffle Iron Day-- Little known fact: The first United States patent for a waffle iron was issued to Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York on August 24, 1869. The heart shaped waffle iron is the most common in Sweden, but it didn't come into existence until the 19th century. However, Swedes were creating waffles over a fire with a waffle iron since the 17th century.
