Synopsis
In the magical
underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with
the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in
the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the
Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the
street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use
Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.
With the help of the
handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa
discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply
personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life.
To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from
mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from
the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that
the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When
they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they
realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of
their own has betrayed them.
Tessa finds her heart drawn more
and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods,
continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he
has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free
Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and
what she was born to do?
As their dangerous search for the
Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that
when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.
Review
I'm pretty sure that the fact that this was an audio book is the reason for my lower rating. It took me over a month (maybe even longer) to get the motivation to finish it. The narrators were awesome, but I just couldn't keep myself interested. By the time I went back to listening, I had forgotten what happened and had to go back further. After this, I will no longer be listening to audio books. I've only listed to a few (The Hunger Games was my first) but they just don't sit well with me. That being said, here's my review...
I love this cover! Each of Clare's covers are so beautiful and sparkly and amazing. I have them all on my Kindle now but I almost wish I had them in print so that I could stare at them all day. Yes, covers have that affect on me when they're brilliantly put together like these are.
The same characters are back in this installment of the series and they're just as great as before. I like Jem, I really do, and I know I said team Jem in my review of book one (find the link below to check it out) but I strayed from that decision this time. There is a lot more depth to the characters in this book. Obviously you can't fit too much background in one book, so with a series there is plenty of time to learn to love them. So yeah, now that I know more about why Will is the way he is, I've had to switch sides. Sorry Jem, you are just TOO soft now.
As always, Clare has created a world that I would love to live in. Of all the authors and books I've read, this woman blows them all away with her imagination. I wonder what it's like to be inside her mind because it is just that friggin amazing. Her writing is so spot on with every intricate detail that you literally feel like you're inside the book with these characters. I will have to actually READ the book again so that I can alter my review correctly, but even with the lower rating I can still say it's a fabulous read.
Clare puts plot, characters and detail together to come up with one absolutely stunning novel time and time again. She remains the queen of story telling and while the audio flawed my system, I just know the book has epic potential. I am definitely ready for Clockwork Princess! I hope there's lots and lots of MAGNUS!

“It was books that made me feel that perhaps I was not completely alone. They could be honest with me, and I with them.”
Only a lover of books understands how very true this is...

And thennn..
What's your take on audio books? Are you a fan? I loved listening to the Hunger Games series while driving to and from work in my car, but now that I'm not driving I just can't sit and listen to one. Am I crazy?
