Atari Reveals the Ataribox – Its First New Console in 24 Years

Atari have revealed what the new Ataribox home console will look like.

It was originally mentioned at this year’s E3, show accompanied by a very short Youtube teaser. Now Atari have given us a clearer look at their new retro console along with a few brief details.

In a similar vein to the recent NES, SNES and Megadrive/Genesis classic consoles, the Ataribox will come pre-loaded with a selection of the company’s best-known games. The outer shell is clearly inspired by the Atari 2600 console from the late seventies, with the kind of trendy wooden paneling often seen in home electronics from that era. There is also a more modern red & black version.

Atari have stated that the new machine will feature HDMI output, 4 USB inputs and an SD card slot. Questions still remain concerning the consoles technical abilities, with the vague promise that the Ataribox will feature “modern internal specs” and the ability to play new games. The exact technical specifications are yet to be announced, although some have speculated that the console will be able to run some of Atari’s later games – those they released as a software publisher after leaving the console market, such as some of the later entries in the Rollercoaster Tycoon series.

The Ataribox will be the first new Atari console since the Atari Jaguar released in 1994.
