On Wednesday, a non-fungible token (NFT) ticket to a beer with actor Bill Murray sold for 119.2 ether (ETH), or almost $185,000, after a bidding war similar to one at a charity auction.
The NFT is a 1/1 collectible made by The Shack and Coinbase’s non-fungible token market. It is part of actor Bill Murray’s “Bill Murray 1000” collection. Only 82 of the 1,000 NFTs in the collection have been released so far. Only the 1/1 has a use for beer, and the least expensive edition is listed on Coinbase’s (COIN) marketplace for 11 ETH, or about $17,000.
Six different JPEG collectors bid against each other during the auction, which had 60 bids before it was won by Coinbase user Brant Boersma.
The date between Brant Boersma and the actor will be painted on canvas and put on the blockchain. David Grizzle, who made the collection, will be there to paint a picture of Brant Boersma and Murray together for the beer drinker to keep.
Grizzle said “I wasn’t sure what to think as I’m generally new to NFTs. I launched some of my collections on OpenSea earlier this year so everything that’s happening right now is just amazing.

The website for the project says that each NFT in the collection has stories and memories from Murray that have never been told before. Murray doesn’t seem like much of a techie, but he does have a good collection of NFTs. The actor who played Phil in “Groundhog Day” is proud to own NFTs from collections like CryptoPunks, Cool Cats, Deadfellas, and LinksDAO.
The money from the sale will go to Chive Charities, a non-profit that helps the families of military and first responders.
