Asus has just unveiled its daydream and Tango compatible smartphone, the Zenfone AR during the ongoing CES 2017, where it also announced the Zenfone 3 Zoom. While we have seen a lot of leaks which revealed almost everything about the devices before the launch, it is interesting to see that the Zenfone AR comes with 8GB RAM to support both AR and VR.
Asus joins Lenovo to make the second-ever Tango-compatible Android handset. As the Zenfone AR is compatible with Google’s Daydream VR platform, it is also worth noticing that it is the first phone that is capable of both VR and AR.
Zenfone AR Specifications
The ZenFone AR is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor as well as an Adreno 530 GPU. It is the same processor that powers the Google Pixel and OnePlus 3T. The ZenFone AR also has a vapor cooling system to prevent overheating, a common issue when powering AR and VR experiences. It is also the first phone to come with 8GB RAM. Quite a powerhouse already and we thought 6GB RAM is an overkill!
The ZenFone AR has a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display WQHD 2560×1440 resolution and a new five-magnet speaker for improved sound. Asus’ TriCam system that boasts a 23MP camera with motion-sensing and depth-tracking capabilities is present in the Zenfone AR. Pricing of Zenfone AR has not been announced as yet and it will be available in Q2 2017.
The phone features a PixelMaster 3.0 camera system, a Sony IMX318 sensor, and TriTech Autofocus system. The camera has a few special modes: 4-axis OIS photo, 3-axis EIS video stabilization, Super Resolution (92MP photos by capturing and combining four native 23MP photos), low light, and 4K video recording.
Asus states the phone “was developed in close cooperation with Google to deliver the best user experience” using both AR and VR technologies.
Google Daydream brings virtual reality to mobile with low-latency head-tracking and a unified interface. Tango brings depth-sensing capabilities to smartphones to deliver smartphone-based augmented reality tech.
Tango and Daydream, seem to be promising technologies, however, it is still some time that they become a part of the mainstream. Currently or both platforms, content is still lacking — Asus and Google will be working to bring more apps to the market. If you’re fascinated with mobile AR and VR, or a developer interested in both, this phone looks like a solid bet.
