Favilla’s failed to win the Mountain Xpress’s Best of WNC reader’s poll prize for best pizza, so they are asking for a throw down to prove that they are indeed the best pizza establishment in town.
A Letter to the Xpress:
For the past several weeks, the owners, staff and customers of Favilla’s N.Y. Pizza have eagerly awaited the results for the Best of WNC pizza category. Admittedly, we were disappointed to not be named as a finalist. We do realize that many factors come into play whenever an online poll is conducted. It is hard to compete against any long-standing business within a community because name recognition tends to carry a lot of weight with voters.
Recently Favilla’s was named Best Specialty Pizza in Asheville during the 2012 Pizza Showdown. This award was won on the quality of our food during a blind taste test. With a more level playing field our product was able to shine. We are confident enough in our product that we would like to propose an idea.
The owner’s of Favilla’s N.Y. Pizza would like to challenge the top three winners of the Best of WNC pizza category to a taste off. We are asking Mountain Xpress to set up a judging panel to conduct a blind taste test of pizza from all four restaurants with the results to be published.
In order to be truly called the best, you must compete with the best.

I love the pride Favilla’s have in their product. This isn’t the first time Favilla’s have had a problem with a contest. Shortly after winning the Best Specialty Pizza in Asheville at the 2012 Pizza Showdown in August the following post appeared on Favilla’s Facebook page:
We WON Best Specialilty Pizza in WNC, BUT I was told that we couldnt win Ist place 2 times, so the Peoples Choice we won, but they wouldnt give it to us. What do you all think of that? I am alittle upset about this, although in my hearts of hearts we won. I need some input.
Now many people would say something like, ‘be happy with what you already won.’ But I understand the desire to be the best especially when your livelihood/career rely on the reputation of your product.
We all know the Xpress’s Best of WNC poll is kind of a joke, especially considering Jersey Mike’s, a chain, wins best sandwich shop and one of the better sandwich shops in town Frank’s NY Deli doesn’t even get a mention. But I must say the three establishments Favilla’s lost to (Asheville Pizza and Brewing, Marco’s Pizzeria, Circle in the Square) I enjoy and my previous trip to Favilla’s failed to win me over, not bad, just not spectacular. However, I do know the foodies in this town rave about Favilla’s, so maybe I had a bad experience or I know nothing about pizza, which is more than likely the case.
Bottom line I like Favilla’s swagger. Come on Xpress get these four dough boys in a ring and let their pizza do the talking.
On a side note Favilla’s is expanding their current location to include a dining room and on November 4th they are previewing their new menu for the dining room at the Altamont Brewing Company in West Asheville. The poster is below:
