Are Dental Implants And Veneers The Same Thing?

A perfect smile can boost your confidence. It also helps make a great first impression. But not all of us have naturally perfect teeth that we can flaunt. So we tend to hide our smiles and refrain from laughing freely in public. Related: A WAY TO A MAINTAIN ORAL HEALTH

But not anymore. Because with the help of new-age cosmetic and surgical dental procedures available these days, you can now get evenly-shaped, whiter teeth that give you a perfect smile.

These procedures are quite popular and the secret to all those beautiful smiles you see on people around you and in the media. If you want to give your smile an upgrade, dental veneers, as well as implants, are two great procedures to try out.

If you are confused between these procedures and finding it difficult to choose, don’t worry.

We got in touch with Dr. Aamir Budhani who owns cosmetic dentistry in Arlington, Tx to find out the differences between these two options and help you choose the right one for you.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin custom-made shells that are attached to the front of your tooth with the help of special glue. They help cover gapped teeth, unevenly sized teeth, broken or chipped teeth, and even discolorations. These veneers are made from porcelain or composite resin and look just like your natural teeth.

What are Dental Implants?

Implants are made out of metal and screwed into your jawbones. They act as a replacement for a natural tooth root and are topped with a dental crown to make it look like a natural tooth. This procedure is usually used for treating missing, decayed, or damaged teeth.

The Difference Between Dental Implants and Veneers

Dental Crowns and Bridges

While both these procedures can help improve the appearance of your smile, there are some key differences that set them apart.

1.  Procedure duration.

The dental veneers procedure is a non-invasive approach so it is usually completed in 2 sittings spread over a couple of weeks. The dentist takes impressions of the teeth on your first sitting and removes some enamel to enable the veneers to fit in.

Once the custom porcelain veneers are ready, they are attached to your teeth and the procedure is complete. If you decide to go with composite resin veneers, the procedure is quicker and often gets completed in a single sitting.

On the other hand, the dental implant procedure requires a few months to complete. Once the implant is surgically screwed into the bone, it needs several weeks for the osseointegration i.ethe process to infuse the implant with the jawbone to take place. Only once is it complete can the crown be placed on top of it.

2.  Lifespan

If you are looking for a permanent solution, dental implants are great. Once placed, the metal implant fuses with the jawbone and does not get decayed like a natural tooth root.

Dental veneers can last up to 10-15 years but may require replacements sooner. Just like your natural teeth, they too are susceptible to damage and hence you need to practice proper oral habits to make them last longer.

3.  The Purpose

While both these procedures improve the appearance of your teeth, one cannot be interchanged with the other. If you have lost one or more teeth, or have severe decay then a dental implant is definitely the right option to restore your smile once again.

But if you are looking for a quick way to hide imperfections and gaps in your teeth, getting dental veneers is a wonderful option. It is a simple cosmetic procedure that can give you long-lasting results with proper care.
