National Zoo Lovers Day

Draw a Picture of a Bird Day/Draw a Bird Day
- In 1943, 7-year-old Dorie Cooper visited her uncle in the hospital (who was wounded in the war) and asked him to draw her a bird. This turned into a contest, and soon all the men on the ward got involved. When Dorie died in a car accident three years later, the soldiers, nurses, and doctors filled her coffin with bird pictures. Ever since then, those men and women remembered the little girl who brought hope to the hospital ward by drawing birds on her birthday, April 8th.
