Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena yesterday said that the Cabinet of Ministers has  requested President Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint a Presidential Commission against violence so that the incidents of May 9 do not happen again. He was attending the press conference to inform the Cabinet decisions held at the Government Information Department yesterday (9).

The Cabinet spokesman pointed out that the government should take necessary measures to prevent such incidents from happening again. The minister said, the well-being of a democratic country rests on the legislature. On the three pillars of the Executive and the Judiciary, the legislature is where the laws are made. There are 225 Members regardless of caste and religion to represent this Supreme Parliament. A public representative who represented this legislature was brutally tortured and killed on the highway. Houses of 72 MPs were burnt down. About 800 people’s representatives were tortured in various ways. There is no such brutal attack on Parliament in the history of the world.

“We asked the President to confirm the right of every citizen of Sri Lanka to live freely,” he said.
