Apples and Pears. (And Smoked Garlic)

Apples and Pears. (And Smoked Garlic) To celebrate the 5th Birthday of The Daily Constitutional this month, our editor has compiled a list of 101 things to love about London…
4/101: Tony's Continental

Apples and Pears. (And Smoked Garlic) It’s a personal list, this. Getting deeply personal with this fourth installment.
It’s not a hidden museum or a nebulous nightspot. It doesn’t have a plaque and it’s not much to look at. And it falls outside the remit of most London visitors, if not most Londoners.
Most visitors to London will probably never stray further north than Highgate. If you ever do such a thing, then my advice to you is this…
Have a banana.
From Tony’s Continental on the High Road in East Finchley. My local greengrocer.
Tony’s has been going strong since 1971. Based on the government’s RDA of fruit and veg in this country that’s more than 14,000 portions of f’n’v for each East Finchleyite.
Don’t buy the smoked garlic, though. Why? Because it’s mine, that’s why.
