Apple’s Galaxy Z Flip Rival Could Use E Ink Display for Its Cover Screen

Samsung is an indisputable telephone champion today, but will soon face a strong competition from Chinese brands. Even Apple is said to be working on various prototypes that can be folded, and according to a new tweet from Apple Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple can bring radical changes on the front of the screen.

The iPhone maker reportedly tested the display of the color electronic paper (EPD) of the ink e which will be used as a cover screen on the upcoming folding phone. Because the appearance of color paper consumes a far less power than the OLED or LCD screen, Kuo suggests that it can be the main solution for the closing display for devices that can be folded in the future.

The E-Paper screen has a low level of refresh, and is mostly suitable for static content. So, it makes sense to use this type of display on devices that have form factors such as the Galaxy Z Flip 3. This can show notification and other important things without consuming too much power. This will be very helpful in extending the life of a mobile battery that can be folded with a clamshell design, which is famous for its poor battery life.

Going with information from Kuo, and the feasibility of the appearance of e-ink on a folded device, the most logical explanation is that Apple is working on a folded clamshell smartphone. If that turns out to be true, the Galaxy Z Future Flip Series phones will be in tight competition.

Apple may be late in a folded smartphone game, and the first folding phone can be launched next year. In February, Mark Gurman and Bloomberg Analyst Ross Young suggested that Apple was working on a macbook/iPad that could be folded 20 inches. However, there have been no other reports about Clamshell smartphones that can be folded.
