Apple Plans to Launch a Satellite: Report

Posted on the 23 December 2019 by Anees @ZulfiqarAAnees

A secret team at Apple is working on the development of satellite technology, which could be used to provide the company’s products with the Internet, Bloomberg reported. With the launch of a satellite, the giant of Cupertino could stop depending so much on the telephone operators.

Apple has a dozen engineers with knowledge in the aerospace, satellite and telecommunications areas, who supposedly work on this project. Sources close to the company told Bloomberg that Apple has a five-year goal to deliver results, although the company is not clear about the use it would give the satellite.

This project is in its initial phase, so Bloomberg sources indicated that it may not materialize. However, sources also said that Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook believes that this project is a priority for the company.

A satellite could provide Internet services to Apple devices, but it could also have the purpose of offering users better location accuracy for their devices, which would improve the experience of applications such as Maps.

Under the leadership of Tim Cook, Apple has expanded the budget dedicated to research and development. Apple invested more than US $16,000 million in this area in 2019, up 14 percent from the previous year, according to the financial report published on October 30.
